Words. Humor. Those are my things, and yet they’re both completely useless right now. I will never be able to wrap my head around what has happened in my state on Friday.

As someone who dreams of one day being a father, my heart is broken.

As someone who still feels like a child on the inside, my heart is broken.

I remember my childhood vividly. Losing my innocence came in small moments — specific episodes along the way in which my sense of security started to slowly wither — one observation, one letdown, one loss at a time. I often put up a fight, but no matter how much I tried to cling to that innocence, those moments still came. And those moments are still coming.

And Friday has been the worst one of all.

I’m heartsick for the children whose beautiful, innocent lives have been stolen from them…

  1. Hi Maggie! We “met” on that Freshly Pressed blog about teachers, and then got attacked by that JC guy. For some reason it wouldn’t let me respond to your response to him, but I just wanted to let you know that I agree with you about teacher’s salaries and benefits, although I nearly get crucified every time I say it. It’s nice to know I’m not alone! 🙂

    1. I just read your response! So far JC hasn’t had a fit. Oregonians have a big problem with teacher unions right now. The OEA just denied Oregon the option for Race to the Top dollars b/c they won’t change their evaluation process….not that they even have one. grrr… your blog is beautiful and I meant to follow you last night but got interrupted so I’m off to visit you right now! Glad we found each other!
